Low-carb Nigerian food can help many adults lose weight, and you don’t need imported ingredients to do it. Swap most of your eba, rice, and yam for soups, eggs, fish, and vegetables, and your carb count drops fast. Your market bill can stay reasonable, too.
You don’t have to stop eating swallow. However, you may need to shrink the wrap, load up the soup, and rethink what fills the rest of your plate.
What Counts as Low Carb?
Low carb means eating up to about 130 g of carbohydrate a day, while keto means 50 g or less. Researchers describe the two diets this way in a 2013 meta-analysis in the British Journal of Nutrition.
Now compare that to your plate. One large wrap of eba holds about 115 to 120 g of carbs. That single wrap uses almost your whole low-carb day.
Most of our meals are built around a starch. The soup and protein play supporting roles. As a result, a day of pap, jollof rice, and eba can pass 250 g of carbs before you count snacks or soft drinks.
Low carb costs less, it needs less planning, and it lets you keep some of the foods you love. Keto works for some people, but it’s stricter and more expensive. I’ll cover both below.
The Staples That Use up Your Carb Budget
Eba, jollof rice, and pounded yam are the biggest carb sources on most Nigerian plates. One portion of any of them can use most of a low-carb day.
| Food | Typical portion | Approx. carbs | Carb level |
| Eba | 1 large wrap (150 g dry garri) | 115–120 g | Very high |
| Jollof rice | 1 plate | 80–100 g | Very high |
| Pounded yam | 1 wrap | 80–90 g | High |
| Amala | 1 wrap | 70–80 g | High |
| Boiled yam | 3 slices | ~55 g | High |
| Boiled unripe plantain | 1 medium | 45–50 g | Moderate to high |
| Moi moi | 1 wrap | 15–20 g | Low to moderate |
| Egusi soup | 1 cup | 5–10 g | Low |
| Okra soup | 1 cup | 6–8 g | Low |
| Suya | 100 g | 3–6 g | Very low |
| Boiled eggs | 2 eggs | ~1 g | Very low |
| Grilled fish | 1 medium | 0 g | None |
Values are approximate. Cooking method and portion size change them.
Notice the pattern? Starches eat your budget, while soups, eggs, and fish barely touch it. Beans sit in the middle. Moi moi is fine, but a big plate of beans with fried plantain adds up quickly.
Low-Carb Foods You Can Find at Any Market
Eggs, fish, leafy vegetables, and groundnuts are your best low-carb buys. Most cost less than people expect.
Eggs are the cheapest source of protein. A crate of 30 runs about ₦5,500 to ₦8,000, which works out to roughly ₦185 to ₦270 per egg. They also give you vitamin B12 and choline.
Fish is the next best pick. A medium catfish, tilapia, or titus costs about ₦2,000 to ₦4,000, depending on the type and the market. Titus (mackerel) also brings omega-3 fats, which support heart health.
Egusi, ogbono, okra, and efo riro all fit a low-carb plate. Their leafy bases add nutrients, too. Ugu, for example, gives you vitamin A, vitamin C, and some iron, and a bunch costs around ₦300 to ₦700.
Don’t skip vegetables just because you’re cutting carbs. The WHO recommends at least 400 g of fruit and vegetables a day. A big soup with ugu, spinach, or garden egg leaves gets you most of the way there.
Plain groundnuts, half an avocado, and coconut chunks make solid snacks. Groundnuts supply magnesium, and avocado supplies potassium. Meanwhile, biscuits, sweetened zobo, and soft drinks add carbs with almost no nutrition.
Does Cutting Carbs Help You Lose Weight?
Yes, it can help, but the edge over other diets is small. The NCBI summary of the 2013 meta-analysis found that people on very-low-carb keto diets lost more weight long term than people on low-fat diets. However, the reviewers said the difference was too small to matter much in clinical practice.
A 2016 meta-analysis of low-carb versus low-fat trials in the same journal looked at body weight and heart risk factors. The message is the same: low carb works, though it isn’t magic.
Why does it help at all? Protein and fat keep you full longer, so most people eat less without counting a single calorie. In addition, your body drops water when you cut carbs. Because of this, the scale often falls 1 to 2 kg in the first week. Much of that is water, not fat, so don’t judge your progress on week one.
Is a Low Carb Diet Safe for Everyone?

No. Some people need a doctor or dietitian involved before they cut carbs.
If you have type 2 diabetes and take medication, your blood sugar can drop too low when you eat fewer carbs. If you have kidney disease, a high-protein plan can strain you. Pregnant and breastfeeding women also have higher nutrient needs. Please get personal advice if any of these fit you, or if you have a history of disordered eating.
Everyone else should watch for two things:
- The “keto flu.” In the first week, some people get headaches and tiredness. Drinking more water and salting your soup normally often helps.
- Saturated fat. The WHO advises keeping saturated fat below 10% of energy. Lean on fish, groundnut oil, and avocado more than on heavy palm oil and fatty meat.
Build a Low-Carb Plate in Six Steps
- Pick your protein first. Choose two eggs, a piece of fish, or a palm-sized portion of chicken.
- Fill half the plate with vegetables. Ugu, spinach, okra, cabbage, and green beans all work.
- Choose a soup. Egusi, ogbono, okra, and efo riro fit well. Measure your oil at 1 to 2 tablespoons per serving.
- Shrink the starch. Aim for a fist-sized portion.
- Add one healthy fat. Half an avocado or a small handful of groundnuts is plenty.
- Drink water or unsweetened tea. Soft drinks and sweetened zobo can undo your effort in one bottle.
FAQs
- Can I eat swallow on a low carb diet?
Yes, if you shrink the portion. Half a wrap of eba is about 58 g of carbs, and that fits inside a 130 g day.
- Is plantain low carb?
No. One medium boiled unripe plantain holds about 45 to 50 g of carbs. It’s a fine occasional side on a low-carb day, but it isn’t a carb-free food.
- How many carbs should I eat a day to lose weight?
No single number fits everyone. Most low-carb plans sit at or below 130 g a day, and keto sits at 50 g or less. Start near 100 to 130 g, and talk to a doctor or dietitian first if you have a health condition.
- Is a keto diet expensive in Nigeria?
It can be. A keto day costs roughly ₦6,000 to ₦11,000, mainly because of fish, cauliflower, and avocado. A moderate low-carb plan built on eggs, groundnuts, cabbage, and ugu costs much less.
